Medical examination of third-country nationals subject to a visa regime before the extension of their residence permit is prescribed by the Ordinance on the Residence of Third-Country Nationals in the Republic of Croatia, while the content of the examination is defined by the Decision of the Minister of Health, based on the Act on the Protection of the Population from Infectious Diseases.
The mandatory medical examination includes the collection of information on the person’s health status through an interview and review of medical documentation, a physical examination, a chest X-ray, stool testing for infectious disease pathogens, and blood tests for the presence of certain infections.
The examinations are carried out at public health institutes. Persons subject to the examination (workers with a temporary residence permit) should, with a referral issued by their employer, report for the examination at the territorially competent public health institute according to their place of residence.
The employer issues the worker a referral form, and arranges an appointment for the worker with the competent public health institute by telephone or email.
The costs of the examination are covered by the employer based on the invoice issued by the public health institute after the foreign worker attends the examination.
The basic examination includes a physical examination, chest X-ray and interpretation of the X-ray image, stool testing for Salmonella typhi/paratyphi, blood sampling for testing for markers of blood-borne infectious diseases, and catch-up vaccination if required. If a person has results from previous examinations (e.g. chest X-ray images), they should bring them with them in order to avoid repeating tests if they have been performed recently.
Within a few days after attending the examination, based on the test results, the person receives a Certificate of Completed Medical Examination, including recommendations for further medical evaluation if necessary and a catch-up vaccination plan if required.
The referral form for persons sent for examination by their employer, as well as instructions for preparing for the medical examination, can be downloaded from the attached documents below.
