The City of Zagreb is made up of 17 city district assemblies and 218 city local board assemblies. Each has their citizen representatives through whom citizens participate in public work which influences their everyday life in their local communities.
Citizens elect over 1,600 representatives every four years during local elections.
The City of Zagreb Statute dictates that city district assemblies and city local board assemblies oversee road and green surface upkeep, cleaning public surfaces and improving communal standards. They receive 10% of the City budget for these purposes.
At the same time, the assemblies can push citizen interest initiatives and suggestions to governing city bodies. They can also decide on uses for 49,000 m2 of city office space on 240 locations, for assembly purposes, political party usage and citizen association’s needs
