Otpad nije važno samo razvrstati i zbrinuti, otpad je važno smanjiti. U usporedbi s „vidljivijim“ vrstama otpada (npr. boce, staklenke, konzerve i sl.) otpad od hrane često je zanemaren tj. smatra se kako količine ove vrste otpada nisu značajne. Procjenjuje se da je udio biootpada u miješanome komunalnom otpadu oko 30%. Stoga je potrebno pokrenuti aktivnosti u cilju smanjenje viškova i otpada od hrane, u tu svrhu potrebno je izraditi stručne podloge i pokrenuti edukaciju potrošača o zbrinjavanju viškova i otpada od hrane.

Edukacija o zakonodavnom okviru za doniranje hrane
Edukacija o smanjenju udjela hrane koja se baca i načini zbrinjavanja otpada od hrane
Poticanje iskorištavanja viškova hrane (doniranje, prerada)
Poticanje prodaje hrane izravno od proizvođača
Organizacija manifestacija na temu sprječavanja nastajanja otpada od hrane
