The purpose of the Podbrežje project is the furthering of pro-natalist politics and enabling of quality conditions for professional and private development of novice researchers from the University in Zagreb.

The City of Zagreb decided to provide interest subsidies on loans for purchasing residential units in the Podbrežje district for the purpose of providing housing to young scientists from the University in Zagreb. In the first stage, 208 residential units will be built for the needs of novice researchers to whom the City will provide interest subsidies for the first ten years of the loan, which is EUR 222 per square metre on the average.

The City will pay a total of three million euros of interest subsidies in the first ten years of the project. By deciding to provide interest subsidies to young scientists, the city authorities showed that they want Zagreb to be a city of demographic development, a city from which young people do not emigrate because they have a future and perspective in this city. This measure, by which the City continuous to implement pro-natalist politics, serves as an example to others, especially bearing in mind that the emigration of young and educated people has become a nationwide problem.
