The City of Zagreb empowered the local self-government by increasing the authorities and funding at the disposal of the councils of city districts and the councils of local committees. The local self-government has completely taken over the maintenance of utility infrastructure regarding the maintenance and cleaning of streets, parks and other green surfaces and maintenance of surface water drainage systems.
Changes are most evident in the increase of the funds because the City’s 2017 budget increased the amount of money allocated to the local self-government from HRK 248 million to HRK 693 million. The decentralization of the City of Zagreb made it possible for the citizens of Zagreb to be more involved in decision making, that is, to use the local committees to make decisions on the management and planning of their districts. This will also provide for increased efficiency and transparency in the use of city funds.
