4 Ecologies of Zagreb

19.04.2017.

The youngest capital in the EU, Zagreb is the largest city of the Republic of Croatia, the newest member state of the Union.

With a population of nearly one million, Zagreb is a home of almost a quarter of the entire Croatian population. Over the centuries, the city has been inhabited by people coming from all over Europe, which made it into a fascinating melting pot of cultures and identities.

Zagreb is a safe city whose doors are always open, as is clearly shown in its coat of arms; a city with a tumultuous history teeming with fascinating personalities, and a city that warmly invites all those who wish to get to know it. In Zagreb, you can easily meet remarkable people, make new friends and enjoy special moments. Zagreb’s façades reflect the flow of history, while its vibrant streets and squares bear witness to the coming together of many cultures that have shaped the identity of this laid-back capital.

While its northern neighborhoods merge into the woody slopes of Medvednica Mountain, the city stretches southward over the Sava River plain, and is surrounded by agricultural land.

The specific geopolitical position has always been both an advantage and a challenge. Being situated at the crossroads of cultures meant to be in the midst of tensions, but it also meant for the city to become a place of encounters and exchanges where different influences come together.

The four ecologies seen as the strongest character defining elements of Zagreb are: its people, its public infrastructure, its waters and its nature.
